Brown coat, floated flat.
After the lath and interior drywall, we straighten the brown coat so the wall is ready for its finish.
The coat that makes the wall straight.
The brown coat goes on after the lath, once the drywall is hung inside and the walls are stiffened.
Waves in this layer show through the thin finish. We use a straight edge and a float to make the wall flat and straight.
We check the interior drywall schedule when we walk the job. That tells us when we can load the exterior and plan the finish.
What the job covers
- Brown coat after the lath
- Interior drywall hung before we start
- Straight edge and float for flat walls
- Base for the thin finish coat
Working in Scottsdale, Paradise Valley, North Phoenix and Arcadia.

Brown coat waits on your drywall.
The brown coat goes on after the lath. It’s the coat that makes the wall straight — we run a straight edge across it and float it flat, because the finish is thin and shows everything underneath it. A wavy brown coat is a wavy house, and no finish coat hides it.
We can’t start it until the drywall is hung inside. The walls have to be stiffened before we load the exterior, or the stucco cracks as the house moves.
So when we walk a job, the first thing we ask about is the interior. They tell us when drywall goes in and we’ll tell you when the house gets its finish.
